Why We Stopped Making a YouTube Show and Started Making a Game

Supermarket Music was originally going to be a YouTube show. A weird animated series with augmented reality components, an original soundtrack, and a whole cinematic universe behind it. The kind of thing that takes years to plan and approximately four conversations to completely fall apart. The original concept was ambitious in the way that only feels reasonable at 1am. We were going to fight Gravity Falls. We were going to have ARG elements woven into the episodes. We had characters, lore, a whole world. We also had no idea how to make any of it sustainable as a YouTube series, and we kept getting distracted by the part that actually worked: the music and the story.Somewhere in there we realized the interactive piece — the part where choices matter and the audience participates —

was better served as a game than as a passive watch. The rhythm game format let the music be playable, not just listenable. The visual novel format let the story breathe. The two things we were best at became the two pillars of the thing. So we pivoted. We stopped trying to make a show and started making a game. Same world, same characters, same music. Different container. The demo drops July 4. Episode 1, 7 levels. It's free. If you play it and want more, the Kickstarter goes live the same day to fund the full thing — 18 episodes, 3 arcs, the complete album, full voice acting. The show is dead. The game is real. We think you're going to like it.
